Coventry's Number One Lady
Lady Godiva also was known as the legend of the nude ride was a noblewoman married to Leofric, Earl Mercia. In old English, Godiva is Godgifu which means the gift of God. There have been numerous writings about what happened in Coventry during that era. The lady and her husband were beneficiaries of the church. Godiva was said to give generous donations to churches. She felt compassion for the people of Coventry who were greatly suffering oppressive taxation that was put in place by her husband. Having begged for relief on the tax, her husband rejected. He said he would never give comfort on the taxation unless lady Godiva rode naked on Coventry streets. Unexpectedly, the lady strip naked only covered by her hair, riding on a horse in the streets. She did this to gain pardon on her husband’s oppressive taxation that he imposed on his tenants. This brought about the history of Coventry’s Lady Godiva. All town folks were ordered to stay indoors with their doors and windows closed. However, one man who was a tailor peeped through the window and saw her. Due to the disobedience, he was struck blind. Godiva died between 1066-1086
